How the systems relate
- Mondopoint / Korea — the foot length itself, in millimeters.
- Japan — the same measurement in centimeters.
- US men's — 3 × foot length in inches − 22 (Brannock device scale).
- US women's — about 1.5 above the men's size for the same foot.
- UK — about half a size below US men's.
- EU — Paris points: 1 point = 2/3 cm, measured on the last with about 2 cm of toe allowance.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my foot for shoe sizing?
Stand on a sheet of paper in the socks you plan to wear, mark the tip of your longest toe and the back of your heel, and measure the distance in millimeters. Measure both feet in the evening (feet swell during the day) and use the longer one.
Why does the same foot get different sizes in different brands?
Size systems describe the last (the form the shoe is built around), not your foot, and each manufacturer adds its own allowance for toe room. Two brands can label the same last a half size apart, so treat any converted size as a starting point, not a guarantee.
What is Mondopoint?
Mondopoint (ISO 9407) labels shoes by the foot length they fit, in millimeters — a 270 shoe fits a 270 mm foot. Korea uses the same millimeter convention, and Japan uses the identical value in centimeters. It is the only system that states the measurement directly.
What is the difference between US men's and women's sizes?
They use the same length scale shifted apart: a US women's size is commonly about 1.5 larger than the men's size for the same foot length, so a men's 8 corresponds to roughly a women's 9.5. Width standards also differ between the two scales.
