I once stepped off a plane in Europe, glanced at the airport weather screen, saw “23 degrees,” and reached for my jacket. A local looked at me like I’d lost my mind. Twenty-three Celsius, of course, is a lovely mild afternoon — warmer than most July days back home in San Francisco.
The exact formula, °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, is easy on paper and clumsy in your head. The good news is that weather doesn’t demand precision. A couple of rough tricks will dress you correctly every single time.
The double-and-add-30 trick
The classic traveler’s shortcut for Celsius to Fahrenheit: double it and add 30. Take 20 °C, double to 40, add 30 — you get 70 °F. The true answer is 68 °F, so you land within a couple of degrees. Going the other way, subtract 30 and halve: 80 °F becomes 50, halved to 25 °C (exact answer: about 26.7 °C).
The shortcut is most accurate around 10 °C and drifts a bit at the extremes. But for choosing between a sweater and a t-shirt, it’s plenty — and it’s faster than unlocking your phone.
Anchor temperatures beat arithmetic
Better still is skipping the math entirely. Memorize a handful of landmarks and you can interpolate any forecast on sight:
- 0 °C = 32 °F — freezing, ice on the roads
- 10 °C = 50 °F — a foggy morning here at home
- 20 °C = 68 °F — mild and pleasant
- 30 °C = 86 °F — hot summer day
- 40 °C = 104 °F — dangerous heat
- −40 °C = −40 °F — where the two scales finally agree
Notice the pattern: every step of 10 °C is exactly 18 °F. Once you know 20 °C is 68 °F, then 25 °C must sit halfway to 86 — around 77 °F.
What each scale is trying to say
It helps to hear what the scales are “speaking.” Celsius speaks in water: below zero means ice, and 0 to 40 covers nearly all inhabited weather. Fahrenheit speaks in human comfort: 0 °F is brutally cold, 100 °F is brutally hot, and the decades in between read almost like a comfort percentage.
Living in San Francisco gives me a narrow test range — our whole year mostly happens between 50 and 70 °F, or 10 and 21 °C — but travel is where the fluency pays off.
A built-in sanity check
Because −40 is the crossover point, any Fahrenheit value is always numerically higher than its Celsius twin for normal weather. If your mental conversion spits out a Fahrenheit number smaller than the Celsius one, you’ve made an error somewhere. I use this check more often than I’d like to admit.
