There’s a thermometer in my medicine cabinet that’s older than some of my neighbors. Its packaging, like every thermometer package I’ve ever owned, treats 98.6 °F as gospel — the one true normal.
I believed that number for most of my life. Turns out it’s less a fact about the human body and more a souvenir of nineteenth-century arithmetic.
Where 98.6 actually came from
The figure traces to Carl Wunderlich, a German physician who in the 1860s compiled a huge pile of patient temperature readings and concluded that healthy human temperature centers on 37 °C. Convert that tidy round number to Fahrenheit and you get 98.6 — a value that looks impressively precise.
But the precision is a mirage. 37 °C was always a rounded average, and multiplying by 9/5 and adding 32 adds decimal places, not accuracy. We’ve been treating a conversion artifact like a law of nature for a century and a half.
Normal is a range, not a bullseye
Modern measurements consistently show healthy body temperature varies from person to person, typically landing somewhere between about 97 °F and 99 °F (roughly 36.1 °C to 37.2 °C). It also swings through the day — lowest in the early morning, peaking late afternoon or evening, often by close to a full Fahrenheit degree.
Age, activity, hormonal cycles, even a recent meal nudge the number around. Some research suggests average temperatures today measure a bit lower than in Wunderlich’s era — better instruments, different measurement sites, less chronic infection. Whatever the cause, a reading of 97.8 °F means nothing is wrong.
Why your thermometer disagrees with itself
Where you take a temperature changes the answer. Oral, armpit, ear, forehead, and rectal readings each run characteristically higher or lower, sometimes by a degree or more. Comparing today’s forehead scan to yesterday’s oral reading is comparing apples to fog.
For tracking a possible fever, consistency beats precision: same thermometer, same site, same time of day. And the fever line is gentler than folklore suggests — many clinicians use about 100.4 °F (38 °C) as the conventional threshold for adults, not a hair above 98.6.
The anchors worth memorizing
Medical information mixes units constantly, so I keep a few conversions in my head:
- 36 °C = 96.8 °F — low end of normal
- 37 °C = 98.6 °F — the famous average
- 38 °C = 100.4 °F — the usual fever line
- 40 °C = 104 °F — genuinely serious
The formula behind them is the standard °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Notice that one Celsius degree equals 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees, which is why the same fever can sound mild in one unit and alarming in the other.
The practical takeaway: learn your own baseline, measure the same way every time, and treat 98.6 as a historical average — not a personal report card.
