Buy a light bulb and you are quoted lumens. Read a workplace lighting standard and it speaks in lux. Compare flashlights or headlights and candela appears. All three measure light, so why three units? Because they answer three genuinely different questions: how much light a source emits in total, how concentrated that light is in a given direction, and how much of it actually lands on a surface.
A garden hose makes a good analogy. Lumens are the total water flowing out of the hose. Candela is how tightly the nozzle focuses the stream in one direction. Lux is how wet a particular patch of ground gets — which depends on both the flow and how far away and spread out it is.
Lumens: total output
The lumen measures a source’s entire visible output, summed over every direction, weighted by how sensitive human eyes are to each wavelength. It is the honest bulb-shopping number: a traditional 60-watt incandescent gave off roughly 800 lumens, which a modern LED achieves with about 8 to 10 watts. That is why packaging shifted from watts to lumens — watts measure electricity consumed, lumens measure light delivered, and LEDs broke the old link between them.
Candela: intensity in a direction
The candela — one of the seven SI base units, descended from actual standard candles — measures luminous intensity: how much light flows into a particular direction. An ordinary candle emits roughly one candela. A bare bulb spreads its lumens everywhere and achieves modest candela; put the same bulb in a reflector and the forward candela soars while total lumens barely change. This is why spotlights and headlamps quote candela or beam distance: focus, not output, is their selling point.
Lux: light arriving on a surface
Lux measures illuminance — lumens landing per square meter — and it is what actually determines whether you can read, work, or photograph in a space. One lux is one lumen spread over one square meter. Full moonlight offers roughly 0.2 lux, a cozy living room perhaps 100, a well-lit office around 300 to 500, an overcast day about 1,000, and direct summer sunlight can exceed 100,000 lux. Distance matters enormously: the same lamp gives four times less lux when you double your distance from it, following the inverse-square law.
Next time you evaluate lighting, match the unit to the question — lumens to choose a bulb, candela to judge a beam, and lux to know whether the desk beneath it will actually be bright enough.
