Every Sunday I do a video call with family, and for years I blamed every stutter on my internet being “slow.” So I paid for a faster plan. The calls did not get better. That was the week I finally learned the difference between bandwidth and latency.
When you run a speed test, you get download, upload, and a third number called ping, measured in milliseconds. Ping is latency: the round-trip time for a small packet to travel from your device to a server and back. A millisecond is a thousandth of a second, so 20 ms means the trip took a fiftieth of a second. Sounds instant. Sometimes it isn’t.
Latency is the length of the road, not the number of lanes
Bandwidth tells you how much data can flow per second. Latency tells you how long each individual message takes to arrive. Think of a highway: bandwidth is the lane count, latency is the distance.
Adding lanes moves more cars at once, but it does not shorten anyone’s trip. That is why a modest fiber connection can feel snappier than a fast satellite link — the satellite signal simply has much farther to travel.
What the milliseconds feel like in practice
Here are the rough rules of thumb I wish someone had shown me years ago:
- Under 20 ms: excellent, effectively imperceptible
- 20–50 ms: great for competitive gaming and video calls
- 50–100 ms: fine for most things, noticeable in fast games
- 100–200 ms: video calls start to feel slightly out of sync
- Over 200 ms: you and your relatives begin talking over each other
That last one is the awkward pause-and-collide rhythm anyone who has done a long-distance call knows well. Traditional geostationary satellite internet often sits above 500 ms because the signal travels tens of thousands of kilometers each way — physics sets a floor no upgrade can buy through.
What actually drives ping up
Distance is the big one. Light in fiber covers roughly 200 kilometers per millisecond, so a server on another continent adds unavoidable delay. On top of that come router hops, congested networks, and Wi-Fi interference — my old router, parked behind the TV, was guilty of plenty of the latter.
There is also bufferbloat, where an overloaded connection queues packets instead of dropping them. If someone in the house is uploading a big batch of photos while you are on a call, your ping can balloon while your bandwidth stays exactly the same.
The fixes are pleasingly unglamorous. Plug in an Ethernet cable if you can. Pick a nearby server for games. Pause the big upload until after the call. None of those cost a dime, and in my house they did more than the pricier internet plan ever did.
Next time a call stutters or a game feels laggy, check the milliseconds before you blame the megabits — latency, not bandwidth, is usually the real culprit.
