Every music streaming service has a quality menu, and behind each option sits a number in kbps — kilobits per second. It measures how much data the service spends describing each second of sound. More bits mean the encoder can preserve more detail; fewer bits force it to throw information away and hope you do not notice. Understanding what the number buys — and where it stops buying anything — saves both bandwidth and worry.
The baseline for comparison is the audio CD, which delivers uncompressed stereo at about 1411 kbps. Everything in the compressed world is defined by how cleverly it approximates that using far less data.
How lossy encoders spend their budget
Formats like MP3, AAC, and Ogg Vorbis are lossy: they permanently discard parts of the signal, guided by psychoacoustics — the science of what human ears actually perceive. Quiet details masked by louder sounds nearby, frequencies at the edge of hearing, subtle stereo redundancies: these go first. At generous bitrates the discarded material is genuinely imperceptible to almost everyone. Squeeze the budget too far and artifacts appear: cymbals turn swishy, applause becomes mushy, and high frequencies sound smeared.

Rough expectations for modern stereo music encoding:
- 96 kbps and below: audibly compromised on most material; acceptable for voice and podcasts

Bitrate converts directly into storage and bandwidth. Divide kbps by 8 to get kilobytes per second: a 320 kbps stream consumes 40 KB per second, about 2.4 MB per minute, roughly 144 MB per hour. A lossless stream can triple that. Over a month of heavy mobile listening, the difference between quality tiers is measured in gigabytes, which is why the high-quality toggle usually hides behind a Wi-Fi-only setting.
The practical move is simple: pick the highest bitrate your storage and data plan tolerate, but do not lose sleep beyond 256 kbps in a modern codec — from there, your headphones and your listening room matter far more than the number.
