Every autumn, as the first cold mornings arrive, dashboards across the northern hemisphere light up with tire pressure warnings. Drivers assume a puncture; usually the culprit is simply physics. Why underinflation matters more than it seems
A few PSI sounds trivial, but tires are engineered around a narrow pressure window. Underinflated tires flex more, which builds heat, accelerates shoulder wear, lengthens braking distances, and dulls steering response. Rolling resistance climbs too, quietly costing fuel — a few percent at meaningful underinflation. Because the pressure loss from cooling arrives gradually and affects all four tires evenly, it rarely feels like anything is wrong, which is exactly why seasonal checks matter.
Checking and adjusting properly
Always measure cold — meaning the car has sat for a few hours or driven only a short distance — because driving warms the air inside and can raise readings by several PSI, masking a shortfall. Inflate to the figure on the driver’s door placard, not the maximum molded on the tire sidewall; that sidewall number is a limit, not a recommendation. In climates with strong seasons, it is worth checking monthly and expecting to add air as autumn deepens. And if you bleed pressure from warm tires to hit the placard number, you will be underinflated once they cool.
