Horsepower: James Watt's Marketing Unit

Living on a San Francisco hill, I get a free physics demonstration every day: cars of every vintage groaning up the grade outside my window. Some crawl, some barely notice the slope. The difference, we all say without thinking, is horsepower — and I have always enjoyed the fact that the unit itself started life as a sales pitch.

Horsepower may be the only scientific unit invented primarily to close deals. In the late 1700s, James Watt needed to convince mill and mine owners to swap their working horses for his improved steam engines. Quoting output in some abstract measure would have meant nothing to them, so he priced his machines in the currency they already understood: the animals being replaced.

How Watt actually measured a horse

Watt studied horses turning mill wheels and estimated how much weight a typical horse could raise, how fast, and for how long. He settled on a round figure: 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute — the equivalent of lifting 330 pounds of coal 100 feet in one minute, sustained through a working day.

Some historians suspect he was generous to the horses, deliberately understating his engines so they would overdeliver. Either way, the definition stuck, and it converts to about 745.7 watts in modern units. Honest marketing, built on real measurement — a rarer combination than it should be.

One name, several slightly different units

There is a nice irony here: the SI unit of power was later named after Watt himself, so today we measure horsepower in watts. The salesman became the standard. But the unit splintered along the way:

  • Mechanical horsepower (US and UK): about 745.7 W
  • Metric horsepower (Europe and Asia, written PS, CV, or ch): about 735.5 W
  • Electric motors historically carried yet another variant for ratings

The gap between the first two is only about 1.4 percent, but it means a car rated 300 PS is roughly 296 mechanical horsepower — worth knowing when you are comparing spec sheets across markets, as I have done more than once while daydreaming about cars I will never buy.

Why the unit refuses to retire

Engineers work happily in kilowatts, and many countries require kW on official documents. Yet car advertising everywhere still leads with horsepower, for the same reason Watt invented it: it communicates.

A lifetime around cars gives you an intuitive scale — economy cars near 100 hp, sports cars past 400 — and no regulator has dislodged that shared vocabulary. Even fully electric cars, machines with no cylinders and certainly no horses, are marketed by horsepower.

When you see a horsepower figure, just remember the anchor: one mechanical horsepower is about 745.7 watts, roughly three-quarters of a kilowatt, and the rest is 250-year-old salesmanship that simply worked.
