Pick up a box of ammunition and you will see bullet weights listed in grains. Read an old pharmacy label and you may find aspirin dosed in grains too. The grain is one of the oldest weight units still in daily use, and at just 64.79891 milligrams — a fixed, exact value — it is also one of the smallest customary units ever standardized.
The origin is exactly what the name suggests: a single grain of cereal, traditionally barley, taken from the middle of the ear where seeds are most uniform. Ancient and medieval traders needed a tiny, universally available reference weight, and seeds were nature’s answer — the same logic that gave gem traders the carob-seed carat.
The quiet foundation of English weights
The grain’s historical importance is far bigger than its size. It served as the common root of England’s competing weight systems: the avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 7,000 grains, while the troy pound is 5,760 grains and the troy ounce 480 grains. When people needed to reconcile the everyday system with the precious-metals system, the grain was the shared currency between them.

Where the grain lives today
Three communities keep the grain alive:
- Shooters and reloaders, who weigh bullets and gunpowder charges in grains — a typical 9mm bullet is around 115 grains, and powder charges are measured to a fraction of a grain
- Archers, who rate arrow tips and shafts in grains to tune arrow balance and speed
- Medicine, historically, where drugs were dosed in grains — a standard adult aspirin tablet of 325 mg corresponds to the old five-grain dose
The shooting-sports usage is the most demanding. Consistency of a powder charge directly affects a cartridge’s pressure and accuracy, so reloading scales resolve down to a tenth of a grain, about 6.5 milligrams — roughly the weight of a small snowflake.
A word of caution around old doses
The grain’s survival in medicine is mostly historical now, and for good reason: grain-based prescriptions were a known source of confusion, since a handwritten gr could be misread and the unit itself was unfamiliar to patients. Modern practice uses milligrams almost exclusively. If you ever encounter an old label or recipe dosed in grains, convert carefully — one grain is about 65 milligrams — and double-check with a pharmacist rather than estimating.
The grain is a lovely example of a unit that survives not out of stubbornness but because certain crafts genuinely benefit from a very small, very traditional increment.
