Gas prices in San Francisco have a way of making you do arithmetic at the pump. On a drive up the coast last year I caught myself staring at the total and wondering, not for the first time, what that tank actually cost me per mile.
Fuel economy figures never answer that directly. The brochure says miles per gallon, the station says price per gallon, but what you want to know is simpler: how much does it cost me to drive somewhere? The good news is the conversion takes one line of math.
The two-step calculation
If you think in miles per gallon, divide the price per gallon by your MPG. At 35 MPG with fuel at 3.50 per gallon, each mile costs 3.50 divided by 35, exactly 0.10 per mile.
If your consumption is in liters per 100 km — the way most of the world states it — multiply it by the fuel price per liter and divide by 100. A car using 7 L/100km with fuel at 1.80 per liter costs about 0.126 per kilometer, so a 250 km trip runs about 31.50 in fuel.
One trap for travelers: a US gallon is about 3.785 liters while an imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters, so British MPG figures look flatteringly higher than American ones for the same car. I learned that comparing rental cars abroad and briefly thinking the British had discovered miracle engines.
Why cost per distance beats raw economy numbers
MPG has a famous distortion: gains at the low end matter far more than gains at the high end. Improving from 15 to 20 MPG saves more fuel over a year than improving from 40 to 60 MPG, even though the second jump sounds bigger. Cost per distance removes the illusion, because it is linear — half the cost per mile really is half the money.
It also lets you compare across fuel types. A diesel, a hybrid and an electric car have incomparable economy units, but cost per kilometer puts them on one scale. For an EV, multiply its consumption in kWh per 100 km by your electricity price per kWh and divide by 100, the same pattern as the liters calculation.
Making the number useful
A few habits turn this from trivia into a tool:
- Use your own trip-computer average or fill-up records, since real-world consumption usually runs above the brochure figure
- Work out what your daily commute truly costs per month
- Price a longer-but-faster route honestly before taking it
- When car shopping, compare cost per mile, not MPG, to see how fast a pricier efficient car pays you back
Work out your own cost per mile once, memorize it, and every driving decision from detours to car shopping becomes a quick mental multiplication instead of a guess.
